The rekenrek is a key model for the development of number reasoning. Our wooden rekenrek with 100 red & white beads supports reasoning built on structures of 5 and 10. In contrast to manipulatives, models like the rekenrek support understanding of a concept; manipulatives, on the other hand, are often just a “concrete way” to practice procedures. The rekenrek is helpful in promoting both additive and multiplicative thinking.
